The Lapworth Museum of Geology is not only one of the oldest specialist geological museums in the UK, but also houses one of the finest and most extensive collections of fossils, rocks, and minerals in the Midlands.
Charles Lapworth’s legacy
The museum’s origins date back to 1880, with the establishment of Mason College of Science, the forerunner to the University of Birmingham. The museum is proudly named after Charles Lapworth, the first Professor of Geology at Mason College and a pivotal figure in 19th-century geology.
Academic treasure trove
For many years, the Lapworth Museum primarily served as an academic resource for the University’s geology department, with its vast collection of around 250,000 objects largely inaccessible to the wider public. While invaluable for teaching and research, its public engagement was limited, and the building, though historically significant (it’s Grade II* listed), began to show its age.
Renovation revolution
The early 21st century brought a transformative period for the museum. Recognizing the potential of its outstanding collections and the desire to make them accessible to a broader audience, the museum embarked on a major £2.7 million redevelopment project. This ambitious undertaking, largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, along with contributions from University alumni and other grants, saw the museum close its doors in December 2014 to facilitate the extensive work.
Best of both worlds
The refurbishment, completed in June 2016, dramatically changed the museum’s accessibility and visitor experience. The project involved a complete re-development and expansion of the galleries, creating innovative and interactive displays that explore 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history, from volcanoes and earthquakes to dinosaurs and early life forms. The design ingeniously blended the museum’s original Edwardian interior and existing display cases with modern graphics and interactive exhibits, making the wonders of geology engaging for all ages.
Since its re-opening, the Lapworth Museum has garnered widespread acclaim and has seen a significant increase in visitor numbers, continuing to inspire and educate through its world-class collections, innovative displays, and a strong programme of events.
