Gilders Yard, a significant new development on Great Hampton Street in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, stands on a site with a deep connection to the area’s industrial past, particularly its renowned jewellery trade.

The “Gilt Toys” legacy
The name itself is a direct nod to this heritage: “gilt toys” referred to small, often gilded, articles worn or carried on the person, such as buttons, buckles, and, of course, jewellery.  The most prominent part of the development incorporates the former factory of J. Ashford & Son, a Grade II listed building, which was once a thriving jewellery manufacturer.  For many decades, the buildings that now form Gilders Yard were part of the intricate network of workshops and factories that made the Jewellery Quarter famous as a global centre for the production of precious metals and intricate adornments. These were places of skilled craftsmanship, where generations of Brummies honed their trades, contributing to the city’s reputation as the “Workshop of the World.”  However, as with many of Birmingham’s traditional industries, the jewellery trade faced challenges in the late 20th century, leading to the closure or downsizing of many historic workshops. The site on Great Hampton Street, despite its rich history, eventually fell into disuse and disrepair.

21st Century renaissance
The early 21st century brought a new vision for this valuable heritage asset. In 2013, developers Cordia Blackswan embarked on an ambitious project to transform the former factory into a modern residential scheme. The redevelopment, which was forward-funded by Grainger plc, began construction in late 2017.

The ‘Gilders Yard’ project involved a sensitive blend of restoration and new build. The Grade II listed former J. Ashford & Son factory underwent meticulous refurbishment, preserving its distinctive terracotta facade and other original features, while its interior was converted into contemporary apartments. Alongside this, new residential blocks were constructed, designed to complement the historic buildings and the Jewellery Quarter’s unique architectural style.  The development successfully revitalised a key part of Great Hampton Street, turning a neglected industrial site into a vibrant residential community.
