Celebrating regeneration excellence: Gilders Yard Wins 2023 Renaissance Award

The Birmingham Civic Society Planning Committee proudly presented the 2023 Renaissance Award to Grainger plc, the UK’s largest listed residential landlord, for their outstanding work on the Gilders Yard Project in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter.

The Renaissance Award honours the most successful regeneration and conservation project completed in Birmingham each year. Nominations are welcomed from across the city — from restored buildings to revitalised public spaces and structures.

In 2023, the judging panel reviewed several impressive schemes, many located in the Jewellery Quarter. Among them, Gilders Yard stood out as a model of thoughtful and well-executed residential regeneration.

Why Gilders Yard Won

  • Careful preservation of the listed terracotta façade
  • Seamless blend of refurbished warehouses and contemporary new-build elements
  • Strong architectural character and respect for the site’s heritage

The panel reached a unanimous decision, recognising Gilders Yard as an exemplary project that balances conservation with modern living — a true asset to Birmingham’s evolving urban landscape.
