Heritage: Blue Plaques

Blue Plaques

Blue Plaques Project

The Birmingham Civic Society Blue Plaques project celebrates Birmingham’s heritage by honouring individuals and events that have made significant contributions to the city’s history. These plaques recognise the achievements of notable figures such as scientists, artists, and social reformers, connecting Birmingham’s past with its vibrant present.

Birmingham Civic Society takes pride in acknowledging and celebrating the people and places of historical interest that represent and shape our city.

Since the 1950s, more than 100 Blue Plaques have been erected to recognise those who have shaped Birmingham’s history, along with places of historical interest. The Heritage Committee carefully researches each nomination to ensure deserving figures and sites are honoured.

The project encourages community involvement by allowing locals to nominate figures or events for recognition, ensuring a diverse range of achievements are celebrated. This fosters engagement, as residents and visitors explore the city’s heritage through the plaques.

Each plaque serves as a connection between Birmingham’s past and present, creating a sense of pride and shared history. Through these plaques, Birmingham’s dynamic and diverse story is told, creating connections across time and communities.

Renaissance Awards recognise the most successful conservation projects completed in the city, be it the restoration of a building, public space, or structure. As we experience the redevelopment of many parts of the city and demolition of buildings there is a need to applaud where buildings have been repurposed and restored. The award appreciates and values a variety of projects, whether that be a twentieth century swimming baths, restaurant or museum.

History Plates used to be awarded to locations of interest or to mark significant historical events.  They are no longer awarded but are included in the map where they exist.
