The Wesleyan Assurance Society boasts a long and distinguished history, deeply rooted in Birmingham and born from the social conscience of the Wesleyan Methodist Church during the tumult of the Industrial Revolution.

Born from Methodist compassion
The Society was founded in Birmingham on 23rd April 1841, by members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The initial aim was profoundly humanitarian: to provide financial security for working-class families who faced immense hardship due to sickness, unemployment, or death during the rapidly changing industrial landscape. It was established as a mutual society, meaning it was owned by its members (policyholders) rather than by shareholders, a principle it proudly maintains to this day. This mutual status ensures that any profits are reinvested into the business or used to benefit its members.

Rapid growth and national recognition
From its humble beginnings in a small room next to a chapel on Cherry Street, Wesleyan quickly grew. By 1855, it began offering life assurance on a nationwide scale, and in 1866, in recognition of its expanding reach, its name changed to The Wesleyan & General Assurance Society. An Act of Parliament in 1914 further solidified its corporate identity and expanded its investment capabilities.

The Society’s connection to Birmingham has remained unwavering throughout its history. Its headquarters have always been in the city centre. In 1900, Wesleyan moved into a state-of-the-art Chief Office on Steelhouse Lane. This building served them for nearly 90 years until it was demolished to make way for their current, distinctive Head Office.

Birmingham’s financial district landmark
In 1991, to celebrate its 150th anniversary, Wesleyan moved into its current headquarters at Colmore Circus. This striking building, designed by Peter Hing & Jones and completed in 1991, is instantly recognisable by its unusual cruciform shape and large double pyramid-shaped roof, dominating the Colmore Circus island. It’s often referred to as the “Wesleyan Building” and is a prominent feature of Birmingham’s financial district skyline.

Modern mission, historic values
Over its more than 180 years, Wesleyan has adapted to countless economic and social changes, surviving two World Wars, global depressions, and financial crises. It has maintained its focus on providing specialist financial advice and products, particularly to professionals in trusted sectors such as doctors, dentists, and teachers.  Wesleyan’s commitment to Birmingham also extends through its Wesleyan Foundation, established in 2017, which provides significant grants to charities and organisations across the UK, with a strong focus on community and social development, particularly in the West Midlands.
