The Rotary Club of Birmingham was the first Rotary Club to be chartered in the Midlands, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of the Rotary movement across the UK.

Where business leaders become community champions
Rotary International, founded in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris, aimed to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and advance goodwill and peace. The movement rapidly expanded internationally, first to Canada, and then to Europe, with the first British clubs being established in Dublin, Belfast, London, and Manchester.

Coming to Birmingham
The Birmingham Rotary Club was officially chartered on 1st April 1914. Its formation was part of the burgeoning growth of Rotary within Great Britain and Ireland and this early cluster of clubs soon came together to form the British Association of Rotary Clubs (BARC) on 4th May 1914, just months before the outbreak of World War I.

From its inception, the Birmingham Rotary Club embodied the core Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” Its early members, drawn from the city’s diverse business and professional community, quickly turned their attention to local needs. During World War I, Rotary clubs across the British Isles, including Birmingham, were well-placed to assist their communities and support servicemen returning from the conflict, putting their service ideals into practice during a time of great national challenge.

Over the decades, the Rotary Club of Birmingham has continued to be a driving force for positive change in the city and beyond. Rotary clubs traditionally focus on Community, Vocational, International and Youth Service.
