Julia Varley was a pivotal figure in the British trade union movement and a tireless campaigner for women’s rights and improved working conditions, particularly in Birmingham’s industrial landscape.
From mill girl to movement leader
Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, into a working-class family, Varley began working in the textile mills at a young age, experiencing firsthand the harsh realities of industrial labour. Her early experiences ignited a lifelong commitment to social justice. She became actively involved in trade unionism, a rare pursuit for women at the time. In 1909, she moved to Birmingham to work as an organiser for the National Federation of Women Workers (NFWW). This move marked a significant turning point in her career, as she threw herself into the challenges of organising women workers in Birmingham’s diverse industries, which included metalworking, jewellery, and munitions.
Champion of the ‘Munitionettes’
Varley’s dedication was particularly evident during World War I, when vast numbers of women entered traditionally male-dominated industries to support the war effort. She worked relentlessly to ensure these ‘munitionettes’ received fair wages, decent conditions, and protection from exploitation. Her efforts led to significant improvements in pay and working standards for women in wartime industries.
Negotiator, speaker, social reformer
After the war, the NFWW merged with the National Union of General Workers, which later became part of the GMB union. Julia Varley was a persuasive speaker and a formidable negotiator, fighting for equal pay, safer workplaces, and better benefits for women. She also campaigned for broader social reforms, including improved housing and education.
A life that changed lives
Julia Varley retired from her full-time union work in 1936 but remained an active campaigner. She died in Birmingham in 1952. Her work in Birmingham was instrumental in improving the lives of countless female factory workers and securing recognition for their vital contributions.
