Edward White Benson was a prominent figure in the Church of England, eventually serving as the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Birmingham roots run deep
His early life was rooted in Birmingham, where he was born in Highgate on 14th July 1829, the son of a chemical manufacturer. Benson received his education at King Edward’s School in Birmingham before continuing his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge.
Educational pioneer
He began his career as a schoolmaster, serving as an assistant master at Rugby School. In 1859, he was chosen by Prince Albert to be the first Master (headmaster) of Wellington College, a school established as a national memorial to the Duke of Wellington. Under his leadership, Wellington College developed into a significant English public school.
The Christmas gift to the world
His ecclesiastical career progressed steadily. He was ordained deacon in 1853 and priest in 1857. After serving as Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral from 1872 to 1877, he was appointed the first Bishop of Truro in 1877. During his time in Truro, he played a crucial role in the establishment of the new diocese and initiated the building of Truro Cathedral. He is also famously credited with devising the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a service first used in Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve, 1880, which has since been adopted and broadcast globally every Christmas.
Archbishop and royal confidant
In 1883, Edward White Benson was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, a position he held until his death in 1896. As Archbishop, he was a trusted confidant of Queen Victoria and played a significant role in various church matters. He died suddenly on 11th October 1896, during morning prayer at Hawarden Parish Church in Wales. His legacy includes not only his contributions to the Church but also his influence on education and the enduring tradition of the Nine Lessons and Carols.
