Located in the heart of Birmingham, Aston University has a rich history rooted in the city’s industrial past and its commitment to technical education. Its origins can be traced back to the late 19th century, evolving from a local technical school into a modern, research-focused university.

Industrial roots (1891-1920s)
The institution officially began as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School, which opened its doors in 1891, initially operating from leased premises before moving to its own purpose-built facility on Suffolk Street in 1895. The school was founded to provide practical education and training to meet the needs of Birmingham’s rapidly expanding industries, offering courses in subjects like chemistry, physics, metallurgy, and electrical engineering. This early focus on applied sciences and engineering laid the groundwork for Aston’s distinctive approach to education.

Growing reputation (1920s-1950s)
Over the decades, the school underwent several transformations and name changes to reflect its expanding scope. It became the Birmingham Central Technical College in 1927, and later the College of Technology, Birmingham, in 1951. During this period, its reputation for technological education grew significantly, attracting a wider range of students and developing strong links with industry.

National recognition (1950s-60s)
A pivotal moment came in 1956 when it was designated as the UK’s first College of Advanced Technology, signalling its elevated status and emphasis on higher-level technical education and research.  On 22nd April 1966, the institution received its Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth II, officially becoming Aston University.

University mission and impact
The University’s charter defined its mission as advancing, disseminating, and applying learning and knowledge for the benefit of industry, commerce, and the wider community through teaching and research. True to its roots, Aston has always maintained a strong focus on employability, practical skills, and close ties with businesses and industries.
