The Birmingham History Galleries are a major part of the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG), offering a captivating journey through the rich and complex story of Birmingham and its people, from its medieval origins to modern-day global significance. These galleries are situated within the grand Grade II* listed museum building in Chamberlain Square, which first opened its doors in 1885.
From market town to world workshop
While BMAG has always held collections related to local history, the dedicated ‘Birmingham: Its People, Its History’ galleries, as they are often known, were officially established and opened to the public in October 2012. This permanent exhibition covers a significant area, designed to present Birmingham’s narrative chronologically but with thematic explorations within each period. Visitors can delve into the city’s transformation from a small 12th-century market town – a success largely due to its market charter of 1166 – to its emergence as an industrial powerhouse in the 19th century, famously known as the “Workshop of the World.”
Connecting visitors with the treasures of the past
The galleries showcase over 1,500 objects from the museum’s extensive collections, many of which had not previously been on public display. These artefacts bring to life various aspects of Birmingham’s past, including its thriving medieval trades (with objects from the Bull Ring excavations), the city’s role in the Industrial Revolution with displays of local manufacturing, and the social reforms championed by its entrepreneurs. The exhibits also delve into 20th-century history, covering suburban expansion, the impact of two world wars on the city and its residents, and the diverse experiences of its people. A particularly engaging aspect of the galleries is the inclusion of oral testimonies and personal objects, reflecting the city’s vibrant multicultural makeup and allowing visitors to connect with individual stories.
Continuing the narrative
In recent years, BMAG, including its history galleries, has undergone significant refurbishment and a phased reopening following essential maintenance work. After closing in 2020 (partially reopening for the Commonwealth Games in 2022), the newly refurbished Birmingham History Galleries officially reopened to the public on Friday 2nd May 2025. This vital restoration ensures that these important narratives continue to be accessible, allowing both local residents and visitors from further afield to explore the unique heritage of this remarkable city. The ongoing work at BMAG aims to ensure the museum continues to be a welcoming and relevant space, reflecting the multi-faceted stories of Birmingham’s past, present, and future.
