SIFA Fireside is a leading Birmingham-based charity dedicated to supporting homeless people and those who are vulnerably housed.

Two missions become one movement
The charity’s roots trace back to the 1980s, a period when homelessness was a growing concern in many UK cities. The Fireside Charity was launched in 1983 by Sister Sabina Staff. Walking the streets of Birmingham, Sister Sabina was moved by the sight of people experiencing homelessness and a lack of access to basic necessities like food. Her vision was to provide a place of respite, warmth, and sustenance.

Around the same time, another vital project was established to support homeless individuals struggling with alcohol dependency. This was the Homeless Alcohol Recovery Project (HARP). Over time, HARP evolved into SIFA (Supporting Independence from Alcohol), reflecting a broader approach to recovery and independence.

Recognising that their respective missions often overlapped and that a combined effort would be more effective, The Fireside Charity and SIFA came together in 1995, merging to form SIFA Fireside and creating a more comprehensive and holistic support service for Birmingham’s homeless population. This merger allowed them to tackle the multifaceted challenges of homelessness as a united front.

Beyond basic needs
Since its formation, SIFA Fireside has continually adapted its services to meet the changing landscape of homelessness. A significant development occurred in 2016 when their Support Centre on Allcock Street in Digbeth became the central hub for adults experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness in Birmingham. This centre operates as a crucial point of contact, offering immediate practical support such as hot meals, showers, and clean clothes for those sleeping rough or in emergency need.

Beyond basic provisions, SIFA Fireside offers a wide range of services designed to help individuals rebuild their lives and prevent homelessness in the first place. SIFA Fireside works collaboratively with Birmingham City Council, other charities, and various service providers, ensuring that vulnerable adults can access a wide array of support all under one roof. The charity plays a crucial role in Birmingham’s efforts to combat homelessness, striving to empower individuals to move towards more settled, healthier, and independent lives.
