Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club boasts a long and proud history, firmly established as one of England’s most significant rugby clubs.

From cricket club to rugby legends
Its journey began in 1873, when it was founded as the Havelock Football Club, an offshoot of the Havelock Cricket Club. Younger members of the cricket club, seeking a winter sport, decided to adopt the rugby version of football, with their distinctive red and black colours appearing a year later.

From its early days, Moseley quickly established itself as a formidable force in Midlands rugby. They achieved a remarkable three-year unbeaten run from 1879, which included winning the inaugural Midlands Counties Challenge Cup – a trophy they would go on to win nine times. A particularly notable early triumph came in 1882, when Moseley became the first team to defeat the touring New Zealand Native (Maori) side, a significant shock result at the time, played in front of 5,000 spectators at their original home ground.

Olympic glory and golden years
Moseley’s international impact extended beyond the club game. In 1900, the club provided the backbone of the Great Britain rugby team (known as Moseley Wanderers) that secured a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games.
The club’s most celebrated period, often referred to as its “Golden Years,” spanned from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. During this era, Moseley consistently challenged the top clubs in England and Wales, with many of its players earning international honours. They reached the final of the prestigious RFU Knock-Out Cup (later the John Player Cup) on three occasions, finally becoming joint winners with Gloucester in 1982 after a memorable 12-12 draw in extra time.

Modern challenges and triumphs
When league rugby was introduced in England in 1987, Moseley was placed in the top tier, National Division One. However, the transition to the professional era in the late 1990s proved challenging, leading to financial difficulties and the unfortunate sale of their beloved long-time home, The Reddings, which had been their home since 1883.

After a brief spell at Birmingham University, the club eventually settled at their new permanent headquarters at Billesley Common in Moseley. In 2009, they added further silverware to their cabinet by winning the National Trophy at Twickenham, defeating Leeds.

In 2016, the club officially changed its name to Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club, to further cement its connection with the city. Today, Birmingham Moseley continues to compete in National League One (the third tier of English rugby), upholding its rich heritage and maintaining a strong community focus, with a thriving mini and junior section that ensures the future of rugby in the area.
