Blue Plaques in Birmingham

How to locate and see them

Since the 1950s, Birmingham Civic Society has been responsible for the plaques scheme that operates in the city.  We have created a Google Map showing the locations of all the Blue Plaques, Renaissance Awards and History Plates across the city.

Click on a location and choose “Find out More” to discover more about the subject of a plaque.

Blue Plaques celebrate Birmingham’s heritage by honouring individuals and events that have made significant contributions to the city’s history, connecting Birmingham’s past with its vibrant present and recognising the achievements of notable figures such as scientists, artists, and social reformers.  The project encourages community involvement by accepting nominations for individuals or events for recognition, ensuring a diverse range of achievements are celebrated. Through these plaques, Birmingham’s dynamic and diverse story is told, creating connections across time and communities.

Renaissance Awards recognise the most successful conservation projects completed in the city, be it the restoration of a building, public space, or structure. As we experience the redevelopment of many parts of the city and demolition of buildings there is a need to applaud where buildings have been repurposed and restored. The award appreciates and values a variety of projects, whether that be a twentieth century swimming baths, restaurant or museum.

History Plates used to be awarded to locations of interest or to mark significant historical events.  They are no longer awarded but are included in the map where they exist.
