Riflemaker

From global gun factory to stylish homes

Renaissance Plaque Awarded: 2018
Address: 32 Water Street, B3 1HL

The building on Water Street now known as The Riflemaker has a fascinating and deeply rooted history in Birmingham’s reputation as a global centre for gun manufacturing.

The Gun Quarter’s golden age
The structure itself dates back to the mid-19th century, a period when Birmingham’s gun trade was at its peak. It was originally built as a factory and showroom – the architecture reflects the industrial needs of the time, typically robust and functional, designed to house workshops, machinery, and offices for the complex process of gun production. Birmingham-made guns were exported worldwide, supplying armies, civilians, and explorers alike, and factories like this one on Water Street were at the heart of that global enterprise.

End of an era
As the 20th century progressed, Birmingham’s traditional gun trade declined, facing challenges from mass production elsewhere and shifts in demand. Many of the old gun factories either closed, were demolished, or adapted for other uses. The building on Water Street, too, transitioned away from its original purpose.

Symbol of transformation
In the early 21st century, the building underwent a significant and sympathetic regeneration project. Recognising its unique heritage and robust structure, developers transformed the former gun factory into modern residential apartments, rebranding it as ‘The Riflemaker’. The conversion aimed to retain as much of the original industrial character as possible. Features such as large windows (to maximise natural light for the gun makers), exposed brickwork, and high ceilings were preserved and integrated into the design of the new apartments. The Riflemaker stands as a successful example of heritage-led regeneration, breathing new life into a building that once played a crucial role in shaping Birmingham’s global reputation, and continuing to contribute to the residential renaissance of the historic Gun Quarter.
